The Laki eruption took place in 1783 to 1784 and the Eldgj\u00e1 eruption around 938. The Eldgj\u00e1 fissure was created in those eruptions. It is a 60 km long fissure that extand from the mountain Gj\u00e1tindur til the glacier M\u00fdrdalsj\u00f6kull in southeast.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In our hour expedition we will mount the mountain Gj\u00e1tind and then move down the Eldgj\u00e1 fissure to observe that fissure and the waterfall \u00d3f\u00e6rufoss that falls in the Eldgj\u00e1 canyon. Both of these eruptions had worldwide impacts the total lava flow from the Eldgj\u00e1 Eruption is estimated around 19km3 and the\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><b>Day 1<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Hikers will travel to H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l by their own volition. The road leading to H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l is clear for any type of car even though it is F road for the last 20 km. parking space is available there for travelers and hikers to park during the time of hiking. The hikers will travel with a bus fit for the rough highland roads from H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l to Sveinstindur. The hike begins by hiking to the top of Sveinstindur. The view from the top is spectacular. The view stretches over the breath-taking valleys and mountains given to us by Mother Nature. The hike continues from Sveinstindur to a cabin by the river Skaft\u00e1 where the first night will be spent. The day\u2019s hike will be around 4-5 hours long. The starting destination at the bottom of Sveinstindur is around 600 meters above sea level and the top is 1090 meters. The elevation is therefore 5-600 meters.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Langisj\u00f3r is a large lake southwest of the glacier Vatnaj\u00f6kull. The lake is 27 square kilometers, 20km long and 2km wide, at its widest. The altitude is 662m above sea level. East of Langisj\u00f3r is the mountain range F\u00f6grufj\u00f6ll in which many rock formations lead into the water and into the fjords and bays. By the southern end of the lake is Sveinstindur, a mountain named after Sveinn P\u00e1lsson, a physician and naturalist from the town of V\u00edk. Sveinstindur is 1092m above sea level. The hike is relatively easy and hikers with little to no experience are able to get to the top with an increase of 400m in altitude. The view from the top is unique, it is said that in case the weather is good enough, a person should be able to see a view that stretches a quarter over Iceland. From the glacier \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull in the east, to Hellishei\u00f0i and the two galciers Langj\u00f6kull and Hofsj\u00f6kull in the west. The view stretches over all of Lanigsj\u00f3r additionally, an unforgettable sight to see. To the right from the lake is the mountain range F\u00f6grufj\u00f6ll with numerous lagoons between highs and peaks. East of F\u00f6grufj\u00f6ll runs the glacier river Skaft\u00e1, which has historically crashed with catastrophic floods. The floods originate in Skaft\u00e1rkatlar, which are close to the glacier Vatnaj\u00f6kull. From the east of Skaft\u00e1, one can see the crater Lakag\u00edgar, where the lava from Skaft\u00e1 flooded in the lowlands in 1783 \u2013 the third largest lava flow on earth since the last Ice Age.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Langisj\u00f3r, one of Europe\u2019s most beautiful and pristine highland lakes, is tucked in between the beautiful Tungn\u00e1rfj\u00f6ll and F\u00f6grufj\u00f6ll Mountains at the western edge of Vatnaj\u00f6kull Glacier. Measuring 20 km long and 2 km wide in some places, the lake is 27sq km and 75m at its deepest, and lies some 640m above sea level. The view \u00a0around the lake is magnificent and at southern end of the lake stands Sveinstindur (1090 m) which is considered by many to be one of the best views of the panorama of the surrounding area. Views \u00a0over Lakag\u00edgar, Skaft\u00e1reldahraun, \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kul and Hekla are possible in clear weather.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><b>Day 2<\/b><\/div>\n<div>From there keep walking along Skaft\u00e1 through sandy and moss covered paths, through valleys and canyons near Uxatindar and to Sk\u00e6lingar in St\u00f3ragil In St\u00f3ragil there are many amazing lava formations from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laki\" rev=\"en_rl_none\">Sk\u00e1ft\u00e1reldar<\/a>.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Day two starts off by a walk alongside the river Skaft\u00e1 and by the valley Hvanngil and mountain Uxatindur. The second day\u2019s hike can be expected to be around 18km in a fabulously colorful landscape. The views are a momentous part of the trip and are unforgettable. The hike\u2019s destination for day two is Sk\u00e6lingar, where the most adventurous hikers will be able to bathe in a cold mere.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In Sk\u00e6lingar there is an old cabin that one\u2019s belonged to the farmers in this part of Iceland. One of many such cabins in Iceland that were used in the autumn in the sheep round-up, when farmers collected sheep from the Highland.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>One such place is the wonderful world of unusual lava formation at Sk\u00e6lingar.\u00a0 A place where everything is calm and quiet but yet a place that looks strange and exotic.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>beautiful scenery.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><b>Day 3<\/b><\/div>\n<div>For the third and final day the hikers will start off hiking from Sk\u00e6lingar to the final destination of H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l\u00a0. The hike starts off by a hike from Sk\u00e6lingar to Gj\u00e1tindur, from the top of which a magnificent view of Iceland can be seen. The trail continues down Gj\u00e1tindur into the lava canyon Eldgj\u00e1 and to the infamous waterfall \u00d3f\u00e6rufoss \u2013 a popular destination for a lunch break before continuing the trail to H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l. The night will be spent in a cabin or tent in H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l. The day\u2019s hike is around 17km long.<\/div>\n<div>From St\u00f3ragil we head to Gj\u00e1tindur and then to Eldgj\u00e1 and take a look at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.klaustur.is\/Ferdathjonusta\/English\/Interesting_places\/Ofaerufoss\" rev=\"en_rl_none\">\u00d3f\u00e6rufoss<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Lastly we walk to H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l where people shower, barbecue and relax until they fall asleep. This walk is about 36-40 km long. You can reserve accomodation and transportation of luggage in H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l.\u00a0.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>A place where everything is calm and quiet but yet a place that looks strange and exotic.\u00a0 It is a place where you can easily conclude that elves or creatures of another dimension exist, and you don&#8217;t want to disturb them.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Silfurfoss (the Silver waterfall) is definitely one of these hidden gems Iceland has to offer. From St\u00fatur the trek goes to Hvanngil where the tour ends. A full tour is a total of 6 days of trekking but it is possible to hop off or on in H\u00f3laskj\u00f3l Highland Center so the tour can be divided in two parts for trekkers that would like to trek either one of the treks or perhaps taking both parts as one.
